Raising the roof
Or in this case, dropping it onto the floor. About 3 years ago my mother in law had a problem with the shower and redirected a couple of gallons of water down the side of the bath in our bathroom. It found its way out of the bathroom by pouring through the dining room roof. We let everything dry out and then repainted. Unfortunately, there must have been more damage than we thought, as this evening a couple of square yards of ceiling fell down onto the sideboard stacked with the best dinner service.

However, I did find a book I was looking for when I cleaned up, so not all bad then.

Sock status - white and dusty.

There's a mouse in the house
The down side of keeping geese is squeaky little freeloaders in the garden. Especially the ones who hop in through the door to cut out the middle man and get to the source of the grain. So now I have to buy another humane trap, as I lent the last one to a colleague and the ''mouse'' in his attic ate it. And his plastic water pipes. Must have been a big mouse :) So little Jerry is somewhere in my living room, waiting for lights out so he can feast on Marriages corn. His time will come. But not now, as it is half past stupid o'clock and I need to get some sleep. I can hear a Tawney Owl calling out in the garden, so perhaps speedy had good reason to come in. Oh well, 'till tomorrow, Pinky.

Bin a while
Been busy at work, and spending most computer time editing Wikipedia, but got a nudge from NinjaNick so here I am to prove I'm not dead :)

Took a day off work yesterday and my wife and I spent the day in the New Forest, calling in at Romsey, where we bought very nice cherries from a local greengrocer. A plaque informed us that two Roundhead soldiers were hanged from an iron shop sign support during the English Civil War in the main square. The iron support is still there and now advertises the local Conservative club :) Called in at Hythe and took a trip on Britain's oldest electric pier railway. Visited Highcliffe, Brockenhurst, Milford on Sea and had a nice evening meal at The Rising Sun in New Milton before driving home.

A long time since I posted. Here I am, sat in a hotel room in Dresden for a week long conference. Out of the window I can see the floodlit dome of the Frauenkirch and in the distance the voices of thousands of Germans cheering or groaning depending on how the Euro 2008 match against Austria is going...

Doorstep delivery

But for how long? Delivered costs twice as much as from the supermarket. But it's traditional and we know the milkman, so it would be like kicking a puppy if we cancel.

Sock status: They don't match. But they're both black. ish.

Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet

Went to another performance by the Royal Ballet, this time Romeo and Juliet, with music by Prokofiev. It was really good, sword fights, murder, suicide, classical music and everyone got back up again and bowed at the end.

Two posts in a month! Whatever next. So, went to the Royal Ballet yesterday, to see La Bayadere, "the Temple Dancer". This is a picture from the end of the performance when the dancers come to the front of the curtain. There's a strict no pictures rule during the performance, but they turn a blind eye to photography during the "red run".

Things that go bump in the night.

Originally uploaded by scillystuff
Well, crash really. Directly outside my house at 11:30 at night, a passing motorist decided to play car billiards but failed to pot the black. The car on the right was parked where the silver car is now, so was shunted 30 feet by the impact. I didn't take a picture until everyone was OK. The bus was stuck there for 90 minutes, first blocked by the crash and then by the ambulance. I'm so glad I decided to park on my driveway that night and not on the road, or it would have been a canon shot :)

Back from holiday

Just back today from yet another Belgian holiday, this was the view from the hotel balcony, an art deco ex royal palace. Spent the week eating far too much, riding on trams and walking on beaches.

Ballet again
The ballet was very good. My wife had a total fangirl moment when one of the principals dancing in the first act, Zenaida Yanowsky, came and sat in the circle next to us for the last act. Autograph AND a picture - woo hoo!

<td>Went to the Mayflower theatre in Southampton on Saturday to see the English National Ballet perform The Nutcracker. It was really good, even though we ended up sat behind a hyena and a giraffe. You don't expect to sit in centre stalls and end up behind a pillar - oh well. Got my new RFID biometric passport last week, the same week that someone cracked the encryption and proved they could clone them from a distance. Woo, security, where have you gone? Worked out the lusers I support are generating 2 terabytes of data A DAY - spent the day tape juggling with the system 95% full. Just another quiet day at geek central.</td><td>Mayflower</td>

wow, 2 months with no update...
So, what's been happening? Not much, really. I'm learning conversational french at evening classes. I hope that means I don't need to be able to spell in french. The geese have eaten the garden, it has turned from green to brown. And they are old enough to go HONK HONK instead of meep meep like they did when they were younger. I am still drowning in books, over 4000 in the house and now taking them up to 50 miles away to donate to charity. So what do I do? Volunteer to take and refurbish the mobile 'phones donated as well. Gah. I am trying to make room, so I an ebaying or dumping the piles of tech treasure, ok junk, that have built up over the last 15 years. Lost a couple of rats to old age, at an average of 3 years it feels like you just rent them. My daughter has moved out again, but now she is old enough to be on the lease, so it might work out this time. Supposed to be going for Sunday lunch today, but a call yesterday said can we eat before coming over, as she has run out of food. I wonder if that was a hint? Which reminds me, time to eat.

Sock status: couldn't find a pair that matched.

Bye bye
My wife has gone away for a few days to Dublin to visit family. I took her to the airport this morning and hung around for a bit to see her plane leave. Then it rained on me.
Sock status: Oh no, who'll wash my socks now! (just kidding, honest).
